Our History

We are a group of people deeply rooted in the Good News of Jesus Christ and we constantly seek to BE His good news to all who surround us. We gather for worship every Sunday and then go out to be the hands and feet of Jesus in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and beyond.”

Early 1970s —The Lutheran Church in America saw there was a need for a new congregation in northwest Houston.

September 1975 —  The development of a new mission congregation began with the arrival of the Rev. Charles A. Colberg. 

December 7, 1975 — The first worship service was held at Bammel Elementary School on Red Oak Drive.

November 16, 1976 — 211 charter members signed the rolls on Hosanna’s official Organization Day.

September 1977 — The congregation purchased 6.2 acres at 16526 Medberry Road (now Ella Boulevard)

May 21, 1979 — Congregation begins worshipping in its new building.  The former residence at the front of the property, dubbed “Hosanna House”, was converted into church offices. 

September 1986 — With volunteer labor, members built Hosanna Center between the church and Hosanna House as an educational wing. 

February 1990 — Rev. Thomas Robison became Hosanna’s second pastor.

Fall 1990 — Hosanna started a Preschool that provided a loving Christian education to many area children until low enrollment brought about its closing in 1996. 

May 1998 — Hosanna calls Rev. Dr. David Tart as its third pastor.

Dec. 1998 — The architectural firm of Ben Boettcher and Associates is hired to complete a Master Plan for the church. 

Fall 1999 — The congregation approves the Master Plan  They issued a Call Statement that declared:  “We see God calling Hosanna, at this time and in this place, to be an intergenerational, worship-oriented congregation engaged in a holistic service ministry to the community.” 

August 20, 2000 —  Congregation held a ceremony to burn its original mortgage.

February 18, 2001 —  Ground-breaking for a new educational, fellowship, and office building.

May 25, 2001 — We celebrated our 25th Anniversary on May 25, 2001 in the Bammel Elementary School, where it all began!

Jan. 13, 2002 — The new Hosanna Ministry Center was dedicated

Sept. 1, 2002 — The congregation adopted a new team structure for ministry referred to as “God’s Servants, Working Together.” 

June 2008 —  Rev. John Boldt becomes Hosanna’s fourth pastor.

Nov. 20, 2011 — Hosanna renews its ministry by adopting a new mission statement: “Serving God, Changing Lives.”

Jan. 22, 2012 — Six guiding principles are adopted to guide Hosanna in working toward God’s mission in our community.

Nov. 20, 2016 – Rev. John Boldt retires

Dec. 1, 2016 – Rev. Bill Schwertlich joins Hosanna as Interim Pastor as the congregation enters the call process

Feb. 1, 2018 – Pastor Anthony Chatman moves from a congregation in Ohio to become Hosanna’s new pastor.
